Barometer

Initially I started this work in response to weather data in collaboration with the Met Office and The Royal Met Soc exploring the experience and rhythm of rain. It soon became apparent that my responses were expressing more than the initial intention. They were like barometers of my internal thoughts and emotions. In returning to this body of work, my understanding has deepened and my process strengthened. I enter into a meditative state in which to execute the long flowing lines. However if a thought enters my head my hand judders, a momentary lapse that easily can throw me off course. Too many and the image as a whole is compromised or taken in a different direction. To achieve a pure gesture, a simple line takes much practice and quietening of the mind.
In addition to this I work with tracing paper that buckles upon contact with ink creating an unpredictable surface which further affects the overall flow and direction of the flow.
I continue to layer different media, equally reacting with ink to build up delicate yet robust compositions that hold a different rhythm and tempo
